The formation of the Human Rights Committees at the Districts was a recommendation from the Uganda Human Rights Commission. The Ministry of Local Government issued a statutory notice for purpose of effecting the same.
WDHRC comprises of the Chairperson, Committee members namely Wakiso
Chief Magistrate (Judiciary representative), Wakiso DPC Prisons (Uganda
Prisons), DPC Wakiso (Uganda Police Force), Civil Society Organizations
representatives (UGANET, Redeem International, FIAN-UG, CEHURD, FIDA,
FHRI), Media (CBS Radio) District Technical Team (DCDO), District Council and
Executive (PWDs District Councilor).
The District Community Development Officers are also committee members
are they act as the Human Rights Focal Persons at the different lower level
Divisions and Sub-Counties.
To create human rights awareness among Wakiso district people
To research on human rights violations in Wakiso District
To advocate for human rights awareness at all levels
To ensure prudent and transparent management of the Committee’s assets, funds, and grants, in support of the delivery of the Committee’s mandate
To ensure the coordinated, coherent, high-quality, innovative management approach to human rights violations that meet the needs of the victims
Jane an illiterate widow aged 52 years was officially married to her late husband with whom they bore 3 children. Unfortunately, the husband and children passed away. Her in-laws who included a brother and sister applied to court for letters of administration for her late husband’s home which included their matrimonial home.
James a single father aged 38 years old was charged with murder of his roommate. Upon returning home one night, he found his roommate ill and took him to hospital. The medical examination revealed that he had bruises and passed away due to injuries. James was arrested and charged with murder. Our legal officer Akora Richard took up the matter with the investigating officer. Their findings revealed that the deceased engaged in a gambling game, which resulted into a fight and was badly beaten by one John (not real name). John was arrested and upon interrogation he confessed to fighting with the deceased and James was released.
80-year-old Eve (not real names) narrowly escaped death when two of her neighbors; Joan (not real names) and Christine (not real names), broke into Eve's home in Lukwanga- Wakiso District accusing her of witchcraft. Ironically, this attack happened on 8th March 2018, a day the world celebrates women! Having incited the community against the poor widow, they descended upon her, brutally assaulted her, leaving her for dead. Eve sought justice tirelessly, navigating through various levels of the justice system.
